Situational & Chronic Depression

Dr. Sandra Smith-Hanen at River Lake Clinic will work with you to help with chronic and situational depression.

Situational Depression is a short-term form of depression that happen in the case of life changes such as:

  • Divorce
  • Retirement
  • Job loss
  • Death of a relative or close friend.

We often times refer to the condition as adjustment disorder. Someone who is suffering with situational depression will often times experience symptoms similar to clinical depression; however, there are certain key differences between the effects and treatment of these two disorders.

Situational Depression:

Situational depression often occurs 90 days following the event that triggers the condition.  This is because you haven’t yet adapted to the changes brought about.

Signs & Symptoms may include:

  • sleeping difficulties
  • recurring bouts of crying and sadness and hopelessness
  • unfocused worry and anxiety or continuous loss of concentration
  • withdrawal from friends, family and normal work or leisure activities
  • suicidal thoughts

Clinical Depression:

Clinical depression is also known as major depression or major depressive disorder. People who suffer from clinical depression have at least five depressive symptoms at the same time. These symptoms are severe enough to seriously degrade one’s ability to participate in normal routines.

Signs & Symptoms may include:

All of the above in addition to…

  • delusions
  • hallucinations
  • psychotic disturbance

Individuals who suffer from clinical depression often have noticeable chemical imbalances in their brains, and in some cases there may be a genetic predisposition. However, clinical depression can also be attributed to environmental factors and external situations like: divorce, serious illness and death of a loved one chronic sleeping challenges, or the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol.
